Boy Scout Climbing Merit Badge Program

Boy Scout Rock Climbing Programs
This 6 hour course covers the material in the Climbing Merit Badge handbook. Our curriculum was adapted directly from the climbing program taught at Summit Base, the high adventure program at the Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation. Find out more here: Summit Base.

Verbal signals, rope skills and knots, safety, equipment use, belaying, climbing, rappelling, bouldering, and other climbing skills are covered in depth. All the material is practiced and reviewed with plenty of time to just have fun climbing!

The minimum age is 13. Scouts completing the program will have an opportunity to earn belay privileges at The Rock Club (1 year younger than TRC’s normal belay age of 14).

NUTS & BOLTS

Schedule:
The course meets for three 2-hour sessions. Scouts are required to attend all 3 sessions to earn the badge.

Price:
$75 per participant. Climbing gear is provided. Payment in full is required at the first session.

Refunds, cancellations, and make-ups:
Refunds will not be made for missed or canceled sessions. If a session is missed, make-up sessions are $40 per session. Since sessions are cumulative scouts must make-up a missed class before the next session.

Other Stuff:
Minimum group size is 5. The Climbing Merit Badge guide is NOT included. Clothing should be comfortable and loose enough to allow freedom of movement. In cooler weather a fleece or sweatshirt is a good idea.

Prerequisites:
Participants must be age 13 or over. First Aid and CPR are additional requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge. These requirements are not included and are a prerequisite for the course.

Note to Scouts:
To obtain the Merit Badge participants need to individually demonstrate mastery of the required skills. Attendance does not guarantee earning the badge and earning the badge does not guarantee passing the TRC belay tests.  Scouts interested in belaying at TRC must first pass the TRC belay test.

Note to Scout Leaders:
Our goal goes beyond making sure everybody earns their Merit Badge. We also seek to provide a solid foundation for continued safe climbing. We strongly recommend completing all 3 sessions within 10 weeks to minimize backsliding on the skills already taught. While we do everything we can to ensure that all scouts can meet the merit badge requirements, 3 sessions may not be enough for some Scouts to earn the badge. Additional sessions can be scheduled as needed.

Special information for Scout Leaders

We understand that cost and flexibility are very important for your groups. Let us help by training your leaders and older participants to belay. You’ll then have the freedom to climb any time and at the lowest possible cost. Just schedule a “train the trainers” session. Here are the benefits:

  • You’ll learn all the skills needed to work with your group, and to be certified to belay at TRC
  • Once certified, you can bring your group in any time and only pay the special Scout day pass rate (plus gear) for each climber. Come and go as you please, and climb as much as you want!
