301 - Lead Climbing Series

Tired of seeing people lead the arch? We’ll help you do something about it! This class will prepare you to pass both the belaying and climbing components of the TRC lead climbing test to be taken at a later date.

Intro to Lead Climbing

Intro to Lead Climbing is a 2 week series that will take you from top-roper to lead climbing extraordinaire. Classes are limited to 6 participants per session.

Intro to Lead Climbing Includes:

  • 2 two-hour sessions to learn and hone your skills
  • Basic lead climbing topics—equipment use, safety, communication, clipping safely, belay technique, lead climbing skills and technique
  • Free climbing for the remainder of the day after each class

Price:
1 person: Offered as a private lesson
2-4 People: $100

Qualifications:You must be able to comfortably and proficiently top rope climb any 5.9 route in the gym to participate.  This is a safety issue.  Leading will degrade your climbing by at least 1 grade.  If you’re not solid on any 5.9 you are not going to be able to safely practice your leading skills.

Times: Intro to Lead Climbing is offered the 1st and 2nd Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm. Call us to join the next available session (914) 633-ROCK.

We will start classes promptly. Please be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes in advance to get registered and set up with your gear.

Class Reservations: Required. Reservations must be made in advance to secure your spot in this class.

Gear: At this level climbers are assumed to have their own harness, shoes, and belay device. We provide the lead rope.

Lead Test

A provisional lead test is given at the end of the 2nd session. Some people take the lead test the very next week while others need more practice with an instructor.

When you’re ready for the test call ahead to make a reservation. The lead test can take up to 30 minutes. We only do walk-in lead tests when staff is available, so walk-ins during peak periods are generally not possible.

We provide a lead rope for tests but you must bring your own rope or rent a rope to climb.
